Crystalinity: Just Like It!

It's a super hot afternoon and on such a humid day, the best remedy would be nice and cold ice cream. After weeks, no, months of wanting to try the new Just Like it! outlet located at Tampines 1, I finally got the chance to today!

For those who do not know what Just Like it! is all about, it is an ice cream shop that makes the ice cream that is served to you on the spot using liquid nitrogen. Which means, the ice cream you consume is actually fresh!

The conical flasks are so cool right? The mixture they use to blend with the liquid nitrogen are stored in the conical flasks and beakers and the staff actually wear labcoats as though they are in a real laboratory. I don't know why they're not wearing them today but usually they do.

The only flavours that were available were New Popcorn, Chocolate Toffee and Tropicana Mango. You don't see popcorn ice cream at just any ice cream shop right? Me and Namirah decided to give it a try!

Initially, we were looking at this sign and thinking how can the ice cream be without sugar added, not artificial and have no stabilizer added. The perks of being a food science student, we could predict how inedible and blend the end product will be without all these ingredients. Well, they called it NEW ice cream so its definitely something to try out.

They serve the ice cream in a huge mixing bowl with the ice cream just smacked in the middle of it. Note that we ordered LARGE portion which cost us SGD$9.50. BUT, don't look down on this small looking portion because it was enough for both of us.

The taste showed that what was written about the New ice cream is true. You can sort of tell there is no sugar added because the ice cream is not sweet at all. Instead, there is a really healthy touch to it when we ate. As expected, the texture is really smooth and unlike some kind of ice cream that you have to apply some force to scoop it, this ice cream is soft and easy to scoop.

The flavour New Popcorn was better than average in my opinion and I'm not really a fan of popcorn. They added actual popcorn that tastes about the same as Garrett's caramel popcorn so it was partially crispy as well and thank god there are no seeds (which would be weird if there are).

I didn't actually like it in particular and don't dislike it too. I guess the thing I was impressed with was the texture and how healthy it tasted. The taste was quite minimal as expected from 'no additive' added and mostly it just comes from the popcorn incorporated.

It wasn't something that is really really special but there were other flavours that sounded interesting to try out in future like Hazelnut Cheese Cracker ice cream. Where else can you ever see flavours like that? & I love love love hazelnut so I guess that is the next flavour I would try out next.
