Even though we should always be appreciative of whatever our tiny red dot has achieved over the years, we should celebrate today as we have survived half a century mostly on our own.
My daddy was born slightly before Singapore obtained independence so he, like my grandparents of course, experienced the change of Singapore from a third to first world country. During our once in awhile gatherings, my daddy, uncles and aunties would tell me and my cousins about how life was back then during their time.
There weren't many high rise HDB flats before as people used to stay in Kampungs. We were told about how my daddy and his siblings struggle to get money and how they had to walk long distances just to attend school. Some couldn't even study to higher level of education even if they wanted to because they did not have the money. Soft drinks and good food were privileges they would get only during Chinese New Year (only once a year). Families with many children were common and they had to squeeze together in small spaces. Some even didn't have proper beds.
And look where we are now....
I see most adults, teenagers, children and even toddlers with electronics devices like mobile phones and tablets. Everyone gets to have study now and diplomas and degrees are getting more and more common. However, competition continues to grow as the years go by. Sometimes I think that the simple lifestyle before during the Kampung times may be better than the stressful and competitive environment now. But of course, a nation has to move forward with change.
But thanks to the change over the years, it enabled me to have fresh water and food that are easily accessible, proper education and a comfortable shelter over my head.
As it strikes 12 midnight... I would like to say:
